Probiotics : Let Food Be Your Medicine

If you said “tangy,” you weren’t wrong, but they’re all tangy for the same reason: they’re all probiotic foods. And probiotic foods don’t just taste good; they’re also loaded with health benefits. So here’s an overview of why they’re so special, what the health benefits are, and how you can start adding more to your plate. To put it very simply, probiotic foods are foods that contain live and active bacterial cultures. 

Bacteria’s get a pretty bad rap when it comes to food, since most of the time we’re thinking up ways to get rid of the bad ones, like salmonella or E. Coli. But the bacteria in probiotic foods are actually good for you: these are the “good bugs” that you want in your gut. Probiotic foods also have another benefit thanks to the process of fermentation.

 During fermentation, carbohydrates in the food are broken down into acids by various kinds of probiotic bacteria and/or yeast. For example, in yogurt, the milk sugar (lactose) is broken down into lactic acid. This doesn’t just change the taste of the food; it also makes the food easier to digest and breaks down some carbohydrates that might otherwise cause digestive symptoms. A food can be fermented without being probiotic, if the bacteria that caused this reaction are killed before the food makes it onto your plate. This is actually quite common. For example, if the food is pasteurized at any point, the pasteurization process will kill all the bacteria, it leaves the acids intact, though, so the taste doesn’t change. But other times, the bacteria are left intact – those foods are called probiotic. 

Health Benefits of Probiotics :
Improves Gut Health 
First and foremost, probiotic foods are excellent for maintaining healthy gut flora. You already know how important your gut flora are for just about everything: if you want healthy digestion, clear skin, metabolic health, a generally good mood, easier weight loss, or pretty much anything else, pampering your gut flora should be at the top of your priorities list. The “good bugs” in probiotic foods are some of the very same bacteria that populate a healthy gut, so when you eat these foods, it’s an infusion of healthy flora right where they need to be. 

 Dairy is definitely a “gray area” – on the one hand, it’s a whole food, and it is full of essential minerals, healthy fats, and quality animal protein. On the other hand, plenty of people don’t do well with dairy at all, mostly because they’re lactose intolerant (they can’t digest the sugar in the milk). If lactose intolerance is your problem, though, it’s worth at least trying probiotic or fermented dairy foods to see if they’re OK.

Fermented dairy products like yogurt and kefir are actually much easier to digest than milk, because the bacteria destroy all the lactose by fermenting it into lactic acid. If you’re allergic to dairy protein, this won’t help you, but if it’s just the lactose, then choosing probiotic, fermented dairy products is a very tasty workaround. Probiotic supplements are an alternative way to get probiotics in, but they’re not perfect. Specifically, the bacteria are all too easy to kill.

 If your probiotic had to sit out on a store shelf for long periods of time, or if it got transported in a hot truck with no refrigeration, or treated carelessly during storage and distribution somewhere, or otherwise wasn’t handled well, it’s very possible that you’re really just taking an expensive placebo. It’s also worth mentioning that homemade probiotic foods are typically much cheaper than supplements, especially if you’re getting the best supplements. 

So for many people, they might be the only affordable avenue to all the benefits of probiotics. 

There are also plenty of studies on the miscellaneous benefits of various probiotic foods, when eaten as whole foods:
 • Good for over all the health benefits
 • Probiotic yogurt significantly decreases inflammation. 
• Probiotic yogurt reduces improves blood sugar levels, hence good for diabetics
 • Probiotic yogurt reduced the number of respiratory tract infections in swimmers.

Choose Your Cookware Wisely

Have you ever wondered that you’re spending all the money on getting those fancy veggies and meat and making sure that your diet is on point, but even then the results aren’t as good as was promised by the books? 

Are the nutrients and vitamins lacking in your cooked meals? This might be the case, since most of us are unaware of the cooking practices that might be doing us more harm than good, and wasting the hours of preparation and effort gone in the kitchen. Vegetables contain enzymes that create and destroy minerals and vitamins at the same time. Once they’ve been picked, the creation stops but the degradation of these enzymes continues. 

To save these health boosters the vegetables should be refrigerated until use, in air tight containers. Cooking and storage should be done in airtight containers only, so that oxidation is minimised and valuable nutrients aren’t lost. Besides this, you guys need to throw away the transparent pots and pans and get opaque ones, since minimum exposure to light helps retain nutrients as well. Another mistake we all make is cooking on high temperatures or long periods of time.

The longer the food is exposed to heat, and the higher the temperature, the more essential vitamins you’re saying goodbye to! These two are the most common mistakes people make and end up losing half of what they expected in terms of nutrients when they went out and bought the broccoli and mushrooms and other stuff they didn’t cook in a proper manner. Besides these mistakes, another absolute no no is cooking veggies in water. 

Water leeches almost all the nutrients from the vegetables, and then gets evaporated taking them away with it! So try and cook with as little or no water if possible. Don’t believe us? Next time you’re using water to cook, just check the colour change of the water. The nutrients and essentials are the agents causing that change.

If you’re going to cook with water anyway, and don’t want to listen to us or have no other way, at least find a way to consume that water. It’s rich in nutrients and should not go to waste! Gulp it down if you have to but make sure it goes in, because it’s only going to do you good. 

Besides these, make sure to buy your fruits and vegetables from a trusted seller, and wash them well before consumption to eliminate the dangers of harmful pesticides or chemicals going in with the food.

Air Pollution Causes Brain Damage

Air pollution affects the brain and memory of a human if exposed to it often. A study conducted by the Harvard Medical School shows that over exposure to air pollution that contained small particles such as the kind released from car exhausts resulted in an increased risk of mini strokes and smaller brain volume as compared to others who were not exposed to air pollution. Scary isn’t it?

Imagine roaming out on the streets all day and your brain volume gets smaller bit by bit! Another astounding and provocative finding from this study showed that dirty polluted air caused around a year of ageing internally, of the brain. Who knows how old your brain is!

What actually happens is that when we breathe in these minute particles from the air is that they go straight to our lungs and attack. This causes inflammation which can then spread to our brains. Another harmful effect of the pollution is that it causes a silent stroke which is caused by the blockage of the blood vessels in the brain by these particles.

Another reason to hate traffic jams! (As if we didn’t have enough already!) Besides this, China’s pollution problems take the front news in most cases but it’s really India that is dealing with this problem in a major way.

It’s time to ‘clear the air’ about that issue. India has some of the most polluted regions in the world, so much so that the kids in our country suffer from lung damage, which we’ve learnt leads to brain damage in the long run. Not such a bright future for the kids now that you think about it. With all the IT parks and all the industries as well as new cars flooding the market every day, our condition only seems to be getting worse.

According to a study done by the World Health Organisation, 13 of the 25 cities with the highest concentration of particulate matter floating about menacingly in the air are in India. Half of the children of Delhi have irreversible lung damage according to another study conducted by a nationwide survey. Don’t you think its about time we changed for the better?

Try buying a new cycle, it’s cheap and convenient. No parking issues and takes you closer to your fitness goals. Besides these plus points, it’s also easing a bit of pressure on the air and helping reduce the pollution, something that needs to be done immediately.

Happy Father's Day

Today is Father’s Day and we would like to dedicate this post to all the wonderful fathers, father figures, and male mentors out there who have touched the lives of people out there: be it your own kids, others’ kids, your family, people you’ve mentored, people you’ve coached, and the world at large. Thank you for all that you do. Thank you for being you. 
We appreciate your existence and the often times silent but impactful role you have played in our lives. 

This quote is so incredibly true: We never know the love of a parent until we become parents ourselves. 

When you are a teenager and you get to hear from your parents say you wait until you have children. And you laugh it off as if you will never be in their shoes but looking back you wonder how did they manage to go through every stress you and your siblings have put them through and it does make your heart ache a bit. 

Being a Dad is a job in an ideal world all you need is to spend even more time with your children. It's not that often that you get to spend a long period of time with children so it is important to make the most of all opportunities. 

Every father is different, and in the beautiful time that we are living right now the men in our lives are no longer just the one’s to work the long hours, fix things around the house and carry the heavy shopping. They are doing school drop-offs, they are staying home with the children when they are sick, they are helping with or doing the cooking and cleaning, and many fathers are the full-time care-takers of their children due to the wonderful world. 

So in honour of all fathers, whether they are at home with the children, are working long hours out of the house or anything in between, We want to say thank you !

Happy Fathers Day to all you Dads who try every day to raise your children in the right way.

Urbanization = Constipation?

Has the urbanised new-age India been cursed with constipation? Is the modern lifestyle that our country has predominantly adopted led to an increase in the number of cases of constipation among us? Let’s get a closer look at the problem and try and get around it. ‘Oh Shit’!

A shocking statistic that we forgot to mention is that 14-15% of urban India suffers from constipation, higher than the world average of 10%. Can’t help the sentiment of wanting to be above average in every sphere, can we?

The problem was most prevalent in the metros, and 20% higher in age groups of 45-65 according to the ‘Gut-health survey’ conducted by pharmaceutical company Abbott. Constipation is a really simple term, when you aren’t able to poop for more than 2-3 times a week and this goes on for about 2-3 months, you’re constipated.

Irregular bowel movements, pain while pooping, and hard dry stool are as clear as it gets when we talk about symptoms. But the problem isn’t as trivial as it looks like. Untreated chronic constipation can lead to anal fissures, haemorrhages, haemorrhoids and even heart attacks at a later stage. Scary and disgusting isn’t it?

Imagine death by constipation? In order to be able to tackle the problem, let’s look at the causes in a nutshell. High concentration of Non vegetarian food in your diet Dehydration, lack of sufficient water intake.

Lack of fibre and roughage in your diet Uncontrolled snacking on oily, fried, spicy and other processed junk These are a few of the main causes of constipation. The tacking bit is quite simple, with a few tweaks in your diet you can easily overcome the issue.

Today’s modern lifestyle where we’re so dependent on processed foods and full of mental and physical stress is predominantly why constipation is on the rise. Stress plays a key role in adding to the problem, and should be avoided as much as possible. In rare acute cases, doctors can be consulted and laxatives can be taken, but in the long run home remedies would be the most ideal and convenient cure.

Dates, whole grains, apricots and other fibre rich fruits should be your new best friends. Up the water intake and have a glass of water every hour at least. Mixing dates and figs in warm milk work like magic! Besides this, dairy products and a spoonful of ghee could also be just what you need. Make sure to eat enough fruits and vegetables in your diet and not only meat.

Give It A Crack!

What really happens when you crack your knuckles? I’m sure this is a question that existed in your mind  since you started cracking your knuckles.

Now whether you do it to look macho before a fight, or just out of habit, your parents would’ve told you a million times that its bad for your joints and that you shouldn’t do it. 

Well, you’ll be relieved to know that it’s nothing but a myth. Another floating myth around this topic is that cracking your knuckles harms the bones and can lead to arthritis in the long run.

Researchers have ruled out any such ill effects. On the contrary, when you crack one of your joints you’re simply pulling the bones that are linked at the joint away from each other. This stimulates your tendons, relaxes your muscles, and loosens your joints giving them a much needed break.

When you visit a chiropractor or your local massage wala, this is what he does to your spine to relax it. But you can do this on your own for your toes, fingers and knees for immediate relief. Now what really goes on when you crack your knuckles is quite interesting. 

The cracking goes on at the joint capsule, where the two bones are connected to each other by a tissue known as the ligament. This area of connection of all these bones and ligaments is lubricated by a fluid called the synovial fluid. This fluid has dissolved gases such as nitrogen and oxygen quietly sitting in it. 

When a knuckle is cracked, the pulling of the bone away from the joint causes the super-fast formation of a gas cavity in this synovial fluid that actually causes the cracking sound that most of us either love or loathe.

Once the bubble bursts and the ‘pop’ is heard, you won’t be able to crack them for another 25-30 minutes because the gas gets reabsorbed by the synovial fluid. So you can time your knuckle cracking accordingly! 

If you want to act macho, don’t crack them for at least half an hour before you plan to! However, although there’s no arthritis or any such risk related to the cracking, too much of anything isn’t good. 

Pulling too much and cracking too much could strain your ligaments just like too much of bowling would strain a bowlers arm. So go easy, and give it a crack!

Don't Panic, Just Attack!!

Don’t panic, Attack! Taking life too seriously are we? In today’s stressful lifestyles and hardcore environment, panic is something that comes to us with more ease than it should. 

Deadline approaching, not able to make arrangements on time, girlfriend issues, son’s mobile phone is switched off, and numerous other catalysts are all that it takes to get the adrenaline pumping and you’re having a panic attack, most of the times without even knowing it! 

So what is a panic attack really? It can be defined technically as a rush of physical and psychological symptoms that occur suddenly for no clear reason in most cases! Here are some of these symptoms (Don’t panic if you realize you’ve experienced them!) 

You feel overcome with fear and quite often unable to speak.

Irregular and fast heartbeats 

Sweating profusely 

Trembling of hands and legs 

Shortness of breath 

Choking sensation

Chest pain.

These are some of the most prominent features of a panic attack. 

Now that you know what they are, if by chance you do encounter such an attack, the first step you need to take is to calm yourself down and breathe. 

Slowing of your breath and easy long breaths have scientifically been proven to help with panic attacks. Take slow deep breaths in, hold and let them out with ease with just one thought in the mind – CALM. 

This mantra can help overcome the most intense panic attack, and also help you tackle whatever issue caused all this panic. You sure as hell won’t be able to solve anything with all hell breaking loose in your mind and body. So take a step back and calm yourself down.

Mind over matter guys! But don’t take these attacks lightly. If you’re experiencing them often, and they seem to last even after 20 minutes of calm thinking and breathing then maybe it would be best to visit a doctor.

If you feel sick or your chest continues to pain after an attack then you need to go visit the doc and get some professional insight just to be on the safe side.

Avoid caffeine and excess of sugar to reduce the risks of panic attacks or you could end up developing panic disorder. Besides this, make sure to have meals on time to stabilize your blood sugar levels. 

Last but not the least, listen to soulful soothing music to calm you down and try various relaxation and meditation techniques.

Digital Detox When was the last time you sat down without checking your phone for a good whole day, or didn’t get onto Facebook or Youtube for 24 hours? If you can’t remember when, then the answer is that you probably need to digitally detox. 

Disconnecting from the technological world may seem unthinkable to some of you guys but trust me when we say this, it’s one of the most blissful experiences you’re going to have. 

In today’s hustle bustle where everyone’s busy on their smartphones and social networking site, direct communication has been lost to us humans. 

Cousins that would have bonded with each other and played a good old game of cards and had a hearty laugh at family reunions have now been replaced with drones that sit down typing away on their phones, not acknowledging each other’s presence! 

You know what we’re talking about. It’s right there but no one wants to see it. Studies show us that today’s generation spends 168 more hours on digital media than they do in school each year. 

Astounding if you really sit and think about it. So why should you really do a digital detox? Technology has been made for our convenience hasn’t it, then why take a step back and give it up every now and then? The answer is pretty simple. To stay healthy and stay productive! 

Contrary to popular belief, human beings have been gifted the abilities of singing, dancing, drawing, painting, sitting by a river and appreciating mother nature. 

You aren’t going to be able to do that if your boss is calling you every hour and taking a report of what you’re doing or if you have deadlines to meet. If we had to be robots, we’d be born as them. But we’re human and that element needs to be maintained. 

The sickest of men with the worst conditions have shown positive results when left in Mother Nature’s arms. Detox also helps the human relationships in your life. Talk to your family, life slips by before you know it. 

A good hearty ‘uninterrupted’ conversation once a week on detox day could be just what you need to make your house a home. The easiest way to detox is lock away the electronic gadgets and go on a vacation for a week or something with the family.

 If a week’s too much, even a day of detox is brilliant.

Salt :Choose Your Type

Salt that we consume is mainly comprised of Sodium Chloride. That’s it. Any other colors or flavors added to salt besides saltiness, come from impurities and additives. This stuff is really important for us, since it makes food bearable and gives that salty taste to our food, as well as combines with the other ingredients to give you a completely unique taste. 

Basically it makes the food ‘sodiYUM’. There are a number of salts available in the market, and we’re going to talk about which one’s the best for you. Kosher Salt is the first, and comes in flakes and is used by chefs to suck out the water from the meat. So it’s not exactly your best option for putting on boiled eggs. 

Next up is our favorite, pocket friendly, table salt. Cheap as hell, easily available this is what most of us use. It is mined industrially and is highly refined, with barely any impurities. This is also why it is the saltiest of salts! Table salt is iodized too, so you won’t be getting Goitre if you consume normal amounts. 

 Sea salt is also Sodium Chloride, only harvested from evaporating water pools, in oceans or salt lakes. It contains impurities which give it that distinct grey color and flavor unique to its birthplace. Since it is mostly harvested by hand, it’s one of the most expensive kinds of salt, sold mostly in chunks or shavings. (Mythbuster – It is NOT healthier than normal table salt.).

The most overrated salt is Himalayan Pink Salt. It’s hilarious when you see how it is sold, as the most pure and medically beneficial salt. It’s just the hype. You’d almost think that it was harvested by Holy men who had been meditating in the hidden caves of Nepal, never seen by man! ‘It has been crystallized thousands of feet under the earth, away from dirt and pollution’, but then, that’s where all the salt was mined form, even table salt. 
Truth is it’s got from Pakistan, far from the Himalayas. Guys don’t fall prey to these gimmicks, Himalayan salt can’t be a ‘chemical’-free alternative to table salt, since salt it a ‘chemical’! Table salt is your best bet when it comes to the healthiest salt, since it’s the most impure and contains iodine that you need, and it’s easy on the pocket too. 

Too much of anything is bad and overdosing on salt is going to give you hypertension. So cut back a bit, won’t hurt you!

What Kind of Vegetarian Are You?

Are you a vegetarian? And if so, then what type of vegetarian are you? Yes, there are actually different types of vegetarians, contrary to the popular belief that all those who refrain from consuming animal products are vegetarians and are at the same level. 

There are roughly 4 types of vegetarians, and we’re going to explain each one to you so that you know which group you really fit in and will find it easier to achieve your long term as well as short term objectives.

In today’s times, the benefits of a vegetarian diet have tempted many of the health conscious non vegetarians to switch over, with decreased cholesterol levels, reduced risks of heart diseases and higher life expectancy among the many benefits up for grabs! 

Another major reason is the sudden love for animals, which is more like keeping up with ongoing health trends to stay with the mob but anyway. If you’re a genuine animal lover and are against the cruelty and inhuman slaughtering of these wild ones, then it’s a great thing that you’ve turned vegetarian.

Most people pledge allegiances to animal rights organizations too. So what are these various types of vegetarians? They are – Semi Vegetarian – A non-vegetarian who’s cutting back on their meat consumption is known as a semi vegetarian. They can be divided into pollo and pesco pollo vegetarians. 

Pollo vegetarians avoid red meat and fish and eat only chicken. Pesco pollo on the other hand, love fish and chicken and only boycott red meat. Surprised as to how these people can be called ‘Vegetarians’ aren’t you?

Vegans Ovo vegetarians – While a lacto ovo diet excludes chicken, red meat and fish it includes both dairy products and eggs along with the usual fruits and vegetables. Cheese, ice cream, yoghurt, ghee, cottage cheese, scrambled egg are all allowed! 

Lacto Vegetarians – This diet excludes all forms of meat including chicken, red meat and fish as well as eggs. No boiled eggs allowed in this one buddy. However, dairy products are allowed such as cheese, cream, yoghurt etc.

Vegans – This isn’t just a diet, but a lifestyle. Only plant-based foods are consumed and red meat, fish, eggs, chicken as well as dairy products are all boycotted. Not only these food items but also goods produced from animals such as honey, wool, silk and leather are not used. So all you pseudo-vegans can stop flaunting those leather jackets please!

Say No To Food Wastage

                                      Love and food are meant for sharing not for wasting 

Food wastage in India is a huge problem for any nation, especially a developing one such as our own. Loads of food is wasted in developed countries for all the wrong reasons, but in our case, the reasons are more due to the lack of adequate infrastructure. 

40% of all fresh grown food perishes before it can get to the markets or consumers because we don’t have adequate storage and transport facilities. It’s quite ironical, since India houses one third of the world poor, and people die everyday of starvation and hunger, and we end up wasting almost half of our food produce. 

To top that, 47% of Indian kids are underweight and 46% of those under three years old are too tiny for their age There has also been a prediction for the worsening of our condition in the coming decades by the UN. We also happen to rank 63rd in the World Hunger Index, leaving all our beloved neighbors behind. So how do we tackle this huge problem? 

Its simple. Start by your own self. You cant expect things to change, you gotta make it happen! India is the biggest waster of food in the world, believe it or not! We cant prevent the facts like lack of cold storage freezers or modern food chains being absent that cause wastage. That’s something that the government and major industries need to work on. 

But what we can do is the simple things, don’t cook heaps of food that you or your family won’t end up eating, and even if you do, make sure you save the leftovers for the poor beggar sitting round the corner starving or even the watchman of your societies who may not be getting 2 meals a day.

Rich brats that take a couple of bites and throw the remainder of that super expensive burger could take the small trouble of walking over to the beggar or leper sitting right beside that dustbin so that he can at least fill his stomach with something rather than hunt inside the filthy dustbins at night and contract diseases for which he can’t afford the treatment. 

It has been said a thousand times before, that we’re an interdependent society that can only develop collectively, selfishness and lack of compassion or concern for the surroundings is only going to do more harm than good.

Beware of Dyed Watermelons This Summer

Everyone is tempted towards red and juicy watermelons being sold in markets by roadside vendors. Melons are a popular fruit of summers though its demand decreases after the arrival of mangoes. Yet this fruit tempts every passer-by because of its attractive shape and colour. 

But before you buy this red goodie, think twice as this redness may not be good for heath. Extra redness you see in these watermelons, according to health experts, there is indeed something suspicious behind the sheen. 

Most of the watermelons being sold in the market are very red and juicy. But one must remember that watermelons become sweeter only after summers starts hitting the region. This implies that most of the watermelons being sold in markets nowadays are ripen by artificial methods. 

Vendors offer bright red pieces of melons to consumers who buy the same without even thinking of its adverse effects. They have apparently started injecting a red dye into the watermelon to give it a bright red shade. These colours are toxic and may cause deadly diseases. 

A spurious red colour injected into watermelon gives it an attractive shade. Even the round shape can be an indicator for buyers as most of them have been ripen by exposing to carbide that generates ethylene gas which gives out heat that in turn helps the fruit to ripe fast and in proper shape.

Lead chromate can cause anaemia, brain damage and blindness. Whereas, sudan red is also harmful for stomach and digestion.

There is no other way to check this illegal practice other than the consumer awareness. People can use these tips to identify dyed fruits and vegetables : 
 1) Fruits and vegetables should be uniformly coloured.
 2) If black blotches appear on the skin of fruits and vegetables within 2-3 days, it means chemical is        been injected. 
 3) If the fruits is round in shape. (Carbine chemical generates ethylene gas which releases excess heat and makes the fruit to ripen fast and in total round shape) 

Apart from following these tips, people must go for seasonal fruits and vegetables and in case of any health hazard consulting a doctor immediately is the only solution.

Time to Say Good Bye to Instant Noodles

Instant noodles? Just the name activates your salivary gland, isn’t it? Instant noodles have long been a popular meal option among students, bachelors, and even married people. While you probably don’t consider them a health food, you may think they’re not that bad, or, at least, not as bad as eating a burger and fries or a deep fried food. 

Let us burst your bubble research studies suggest that these instant noodles may increase the risk for heart disease and stroke. And these studies also tell about how your stomach handles processed foods. When you eat these 2 minutes noodles (obviously it takes more than 2 minutes to cook) for starters it first puts strain in your digestive system which is forced to work for hours to break down this highly processed food ( most processed food lacks fiber, interfering with your blood sugar levels and release of insulin).

This also increases your risk of developing diabetes and cardiovascular disease. 

 Eating instant noodles contributes little value to a healthy diet but are found high in unhealthy fats and sodium, just one package may contain 2,700 milligrams of sodium. Aside from a lot of sodium and the toxic preservative what else was found in a typical serving of instant noodles during the research? 

The monosodium glutamate (MSG) in instant noodles is reason enough to avoid them. It is an excitotoxin, overexcites your nerve cells to the point of damage or death, causing brain dysfunction and damage to varying degrees and potentially may cause diseases like Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease and more. In one of the study done on rats, it was found out that MSG is the perfect obesity drug. If you want to achieve your ideal body weight and health, avoid MSG at all costs. 

Recently the famous newspaper, Times Of India reported that the Lucknow Food Safety and Drug Administration has initiated inquiry and written to the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) in New Delhi seeking to cancel the licence for Nestle Maggi. The state regulator has also asked FSSAI to order sampling of the product from across the country to check quality, officials said. The samples collected in some parts of Uttar Pradesh were found containing added MSG and lead in excess. Such additives are said to be harmful for health, mainly for children.

Is Your Couch Guiding You To Silent Self-destruction?

After a long tiring day at work, doesn't heading back to the den and laying in the couch for as long as you can seem like the perfect option? While most of you spend your time on the couch, even on days when you don’t do anything at all and possibly even doze off there, you aren't aware of the health hazards that this soft comfortable piece of furniture could lead to.

There are a huge number of lethal flame-retardant chemicals in your couch. These toxins have been associated with different forms of cancer, disrupted hormones cycles and impaired learning abilities. Sadly, most of these chemicals are hard to trace and the furniture doesn't really come with a health hazard warning.Yes, this heavenly comfort comes at a deadly price, apart from making you a couch potato and a lethargic junk-eating organism.

A recently conducted study shows that people who are sedentary in nature and spend their times sitting on couches or driving long distances and sitting at work had 35% higher chance of blood pressure problems and were twice as likely to encounter cardiovascular (Heart, for those of you who don’t know what cardiovascular means) problems and more likely to get a stroke.

People who spent more than 23-25 hours a week in such sedentary activities were 50% such people were more likely to die of any cause. Sofas and seats are the new cigarettes! Children who were found to watch 2-5 hours of television had higher blood pressure readings than usual kids, even if they weren't hit by obesity. 

Speaking of obesity, here’s a line for you – ‘‘your body is a baggage you must carry through life. The more excess the baggage, the shorter the trip." Sitting on the couch and eating a burger or a pizza is only adding to that baggage and pushing the obesity levels. People who cut their TV time to half, burnt more calories throughout the day than the lazy bums who didn't. No surprise there!

‘Extended sitting may lead to high levels of low-grade inflammation which in turn leads to heart conditions’, according to Emmanuel Stamatakis, of the department of epidemiology and public health at University College London. 

Another mechanism that has been shown to be possible through animal studies is the slowdown of lipid metabolism due to the reduced activity of lipoprotein lipase, which is an important enzyme. Long duration of inactivity increase the amount of fats in the blood and may lead to heart issues in the future. And no, hitting the gym for an hour a day does not compensate!

These long levels of inactivity need to come to a halt. Regular breaks must be taken between resting periods and lazing periods. Take a walk around the house. Stay active, for your own sake and that of your loved ones!

Can Those Nail Paints & Manicures Cause Cancer?

With the rising craze for cool designs on nails, French manicure, nail art among women they think if there is no warning label, it is free of health risks. They are, sadly, mistaken. But beware, the next time you think about changing your nail art more than five times a month, you are exposing yourselves to risk of cancer, warn skin experts. 

Nail polishes mainly consist of Nitro Cellulose, which has film-forming properties. Many cheap nail paints have a high amount of toxic substances such as phthalates, toluene and formaldehydes which are dangerous for health.

It's a known truth every woman longs for manicured nails and catchy polishes to make style statement. But with this article we want to draw your attention towards the truth behind those nail polishes and manicures. 

Your bottle of nail polish has at least three.

 1. Dibutyl phthalate — Used as a solvent for dyes and as a plasticizer to prevent nail polishes from becoming brittle, this phthalate is associated with liver and kidney failure in young children when products (and polished little fingers) containing phthalates are sucked or chewed for extended periods.

2. Formaldehyde — (Yes, seriously. In your nail polish.) Formaldehyde is a common ingredient in nail hardeners in concentrations of up to five per cent. Formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen.

 3. Toluene — Toluene is a moderate skin irritant that can cause dermatitis with prolonged contact.Inhalation of toluene vapour can affect the central nervous system causing slight drowsiness and headache at low levels and Irritation of the nose, throat and respiratory tract at increased levels. 

Does this mean you have to stick to plain nails to stay healthy? Not necessarily! Although it is yet to discover a nail polish that is completely "natural," but you can choose options that are safe for you and the environment.

 No one is saying that occasional application of nail polish will cause long-term health consequences". But some researchers have suggested there may be concerns for those who work in nail salons and children, who are particularly susceptible to phthalates like DBP that pose developmental risks. 

 Manicures have long been a source of controversy with several studies showing that the practice can come with a costly price — skin cancer. But do you have to worry about an increased risk of melanoma at the nail salon too?

 The question has come up since the advent of manicures which has become an increasingly popular service for customers seeking longer wearing manicures — it can last up to three weeks. 

Technicians apply a special polish to nails and then cure the product, usually for four to eight minutes, using ultraviolet light. That’s the same kind of light that causes sun damage to our skin. “UV lamps of any wattage are like the sun on steroids. 

You get boosted UVA/UVB exposure in such a short amount of time,” To limit risk, the study’s authors recommended using sunscreens or UVA protective gloves when getting a gel manicure.

Power Aging

One of the universal truths is that no matter what you try, you’re going to grow old. That’s something you cannot change. But what you can change is the way in which you grow old, the manner of your aging and we’re going to tell you how to age gracefully and in the right manner so that you keep your mind and body healthy and stay happy. 

Let’s look at mental health first, and no it doesn't lie in an intense game of chess, or a Sudoku puzzle, it lies on your shoe rack! Yes, put on a stylish pair of sneakers and stay on the move. Research shows that an active lifestyle reduces the impact of age related decline of the brain and aerobic exercise is the most effective in this case.

 The other way to your brain is through your food pipe, and your diet does matter! Nuts, spices, healthy fats and colored fruits and veggies that are packed with antioxidants are important for keeping the brain healthy. You also need to remember that your brain starts slowing down once your into the 30’s so you need to speed it up. Train your Brain to stay sharp and quick. Think faster, even if you don’t have a deadline! 

When it comes to your skin, your eyes are not only a doorway to your soul but also giveaway your age far too easily. Use eye care, a couple of slices of cucumber, refrigerated green tea bags, under-eye creams and other eye remedies that we’ve mentioned in our previous posts and you’ll be fine. Use a good sunblock with SPF to protect the skin from sun damage and keep it young. 

Besides this, sip on green tea or white tea and consume as many antioxidants you can to keep the skin healthy and clean for as long as possible.

Mothers are not rare to find. Mothers comprise of a bundle of emotions that sometimes defy reason. So this goes out to all the mothers who have kept awake all night with their sick toddlers in their arms, constantly uttering those compassionate words, "It's OK Beta, Mummy's here." 

One day out of 365, we pay homage to our sainted mothers. So you think one day celebration is enough for long-suffering, uncomplaining, self-sacrificing MOTHER. Probably NOT!!

If you really want to pay back your mother for all she's done, just giving her a card and some flowers won't solve the purpose. On Mother’s Day ideally you should be thinking about what you have done for your mother so far and what you can do in the coming time! 

According to a study many jobs done by a mom as nurturer, nurse, cleaner and cook a year is incomparable. Just think about the duties you mother is been doing the day you were born to till date ; Cooking and cleaning, child care, Homework help, shopping, party and activity planning, finances, etc. .And most important, finding out what the kids are up to.

We want to salute mothers and celebrate their motherhood for a simple reason: moms have a tremendous impact on the world we live in. This article is a pure dedication;

Your lungs go for a toss, and may even reduce their ability to shrink and stretch which is how you breathe. Asthma, tuberculosis, bronchitis are a few of the things you need to worry about too. 

Not to forget the constant fear of a flight of stairs when you see one, and the shortness of breath and tightness of the chest. Cigarettes contain about 100 cancer causing chemicals that can cause cancer of the lungs, throat, mouth, lips, stomach, larynx, bladder, pancreas and the list goes on. 

What you probably aren’t aware of is that smoking can make you go blind too. Studies have shown that smokers have increased chances of age related macular disorder, cataract and optic nerve damage, which can all lead to blindness.

For all the classy ones out there that think smoking menthol cigarettes is ‘cool’, let us add infertility to the list of health hazards these cigarettes cause. They are just as harmful, in fact even worse than usual cigarettes. 

Oh, and lets not forget pipe and cigar smokers. These people are at just as much risk as normal smokers, and in some cases even worse off since these pipes contain the same toxic tobacco and can lead to throat cancer, tongue cancer, esophageal cancer among others. 

Quit today people, it’s never too late. 69% of the smokers want to quit but don’t have the will power. No one’s going to come and do it for you, it’s a step you have to take, take control of your life before a small roll of tobacco takes all your decisions for you.

All About Allergies !!

First up, lets start with what an allergy actually is. It can be technically defined as a hypersensitive immune response to foreign substances that either enter or come into contact with your body. 

When you get spots on your face due to constant itching or start sneezing endlessly, the chances are that you've had an allergic reaction to some such substance. 

The most common allergen in our country is dust. The list is a huge one though, with mites, pollen, milk, peanuts and shellfish common names. This spectrum has now been stretched to even include semen and coins! 
Talk about taking things to the next level! Now let’s catch a quick crash course on the common allergies in India. 

First we have tiny pollen particles that are produced by trees and plants and cause sneezing, headaches and irritation in your throat. Certain cosmetics that you use may also have allergens and can cause redness of the portion to which they are applied. 

Next up are the microscopic villains – the house dust mites. These little devils are present in every corner of your house and concentrated on the carpets and blankets, you could be allergic to them too. Animals carry dander, a protein that they produce which can lead to excessive sneezing and even asthma upon exhaling so keep your homes spotless! 

There’s an endless list of food products and drugs that may contain certain elements that cause allergic reactions in your body. Many of you may even be allergic to insulin or lactose intolerant. These forms of food allergies are very dangerous and can even lead to death so please head to the doctor, find out the food you’re allergic to and don’t ever eat it! 

The last of the lot is insect allergies, which are caused by the bites of dangerous insects roaming free in the wild. Such allergies must be treated immediately since some of these bites could be lethal. Now for an even quicker crash course on a few remedies, water up your nose with saline solution for elimination of any allergens that may be stuck on the inside of your nose and causing you upper respiratory allergies.

 The next one is more of a preventive measure; wash yourself well after coming home especially during the pollen season. It’ll make sure to rid you of the pollen and spare you the million sneezes. Also wash your pet so that you don’t have any dander to worry about! 

Most allergies peak during the summer season, so what better way to boost your under attack immune system than a chilled citrus drink that also beats the heat? Load a glass with a few ice cubes, orange juice and a pinch of lemon juice and enjoy your day. Red onion water is another allergy remedy since the onions contain water-soluble quercetin which is a compound that is anti-histamine and hence anti allergy! Besides these, honey is a great common home remedy for certain allergies.
